About the program
PhD in Philosophy at EHU — an opportunity for in-depth research in philosophy within the European academic context.
The program was launched in 2011 in partnership with Vytautas Magnus University (VDU, Kaunas) and the Lithuanian Culture Research Institute (Vilnius). It combines European historical-philosophical traditions with a flexible interdisciplinary orientation, enabling doctoral students to deeply analyze contemporary issues of individuals and society in the context of philosophy, social, and political sciences.
During their studies, doctoral students conduct research, publish academic articles, participate in conferences, and engage in academic projects. Upon successful defense of their dissertation, they are awarded a Doctor of Humanities degree, recognized within the European Union.
Doctoral research is conducted in the following areas:
Modern Continental Philosophy:
- Key thinkers, issues, and methods of continental philosophy;
- Continental philosophy: studies of symbolic forms of thought and philosophical anthropology;
- Research on moral imagination;
- The problem of time in continental philosophy;
- New ontologies.
Modern Social and Political Philosophy:
- Modern social philosophy;
- Modern philosophy and biopolitics;
- Social practices, political discourse, and subjectivity in the age of technology;
- Social and ethical transformations in the context of globalization;

Applicants for the PhD program must hold a master’s degree (or an equivalent higher education diploma).
